Wool blazer with colorful hem from Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, Spring/Summer 1992. The peach-colored wool used is extremely thin and breathable. It has the iconic colorful 'ethnic' panel used throughout the collection. The fit is typical of the late 80s/early 90s, meaning that it is boxy and imposing with wide shoulders. It is not in the best condition as there are a few holes, light stains, and sun discoloration on the shoulders. But, to be fair, the discoloration was most probably part of the original design (read below) and I'm also making it sound worse than it really is: simply look at the pictures to make up your mind.
The Spring/Summer 1992 collection was intended to celebrate ethnic and cultural traditions in proximity to nature. To reify this heritage, they tried to match the style with traditional clothing from Tibet and Guatemala. The material was made to be crisp and rough through a process of washing, color fading, and wrinkling. Old pieces of clothing from these regions were used as decorative details and borders. Transfer printing was also employed. Rodney Grant from 'Dances with Wolves' was notably hired to walk on the runway.
