Murakami 'Jellyfish Eyes' slip-on sneakers from Issey Miyake Men, Spring/Summer 2000. DO NOT COME WITH THE BOX. Those sneakers have been some of the most iconic and coveted ones created by a fashion house. They come from no less than the first-ever serious collaboration between the great artist Takashi Murakami and a designer brand. The pattern of multiple eyeballs is easily recognizable since it is now a staple of Murakami's work. They are comfortable and look beautiful. The washed-out texture was executed on purpose in this collection. As such, they are in great condition and you can see for yourself that they have not been worn much.
Not many people know this, but Murakami's ever-iconic pattern of infinitely multiplying eyeballs also known as 'Jellyfish Eyes' was initially created for this collection. He was partly influenced by 'Hyakume,' or 'Hundred Eyes,' a ghostlike character beloved from his childhood. In contrast to the Western classical technique of representation using 'one-point' perspective, the concept of Murakami's 'Super Flat' is based on 'multiplicity of points'. A great number of eyes look at the viewer in 'Jellyfish Eyes'. By drawing a large number of eyes "I disturb the perspective, or rather, I diversify it," Murakami said. "If we connected all those eyes to a video camera or computer, then, on the control screen. we would be able to visualize another a reality that is completely different from that of single-point perspective. And that is no doubt the visual reality of our time." A lot more can be said about the topic, but I will stop here.
